Nat's Deep Sea Fishing Report

Friday Night Report

Dateline July 8th 2011

The Sea Legs III had 25 fares last night. Very good catch was made by all. We had 96 snappers brought aboard. Capt. Ken asked me to try and show some new fishermen that are part of the coast guard stationed at the port. Jack and Jose wound up with 14 snappers fishing next to me. Nice going to our servicemen. I caught 10 yellowtails. Sehoon and George fought it out for the big fish pool. George won with his 3 pound Mangrove snapper. Some squalls kept coming by. Wet night both in the sea and on the boat. Well, until the next time, see you soon and keep those lines tight. Nat Gross

Deep Sea Fishing Sea Legs IIIRains and scattered thunder storms started off the night but 21 fares showed up and were eager to go deep sea fishing on the Sea Legs III last night. Our first drop was barely north of the Port Everglades inlet at 60 ft. It started with a bang as Mangroves and Yellowtails were coming over the rail. I pulled in 3 keepers on this drop. It looked as though we were going to have a great night. The rains stopped and the seas laid down to mirror glass conditions. So did the current.

The next stop was at 50 ft. We had a slight inshore current.  We picked at them from there. Oscar pulled in some nice Yellow tails on his 1/8 oz jigs probably good 2-21/2 pounders. I pulled up a few keeper Mangroves on a 1oz long leader.

Third drop was 50ft and many of the stern jockeys abandoned the stern and went to the right side of the boat and then to the left and then to the right again as the currents kept changing along with the swinging of the boat. The currents then slowed to a trickle. I put on a 1/16 oz. jig with a piece of Kingfish belly and a single silver side. The jig hardly moved at first but after a few minutes the current picked it up and I new I was in the zone. I said to my self, “I’m getting a hit any second now”, then zing the line ripped off the spool and my pool winning Mutton came off the line. It was the only Mutton of the night and was barely 16 inches but was enough to keep and take home the pool.

Oscar was high hook with seven snappers. I ended with 5 snappers and the pool.

The conditions weren’t exactly in our favor but friendly crowds and a good crew made it a fun night for all.

Deep Sea Fishing Sea Legs IIIA full boat and full moon in June had anticpation and visions of Muttons and Yellotails dancing in the heads of all as we set off to go deep sea fishing on the Sea Legs III. Seas were calm. Full moon was over, we had a 3/4 moon. First drop was at 60ft. We went north of Port Everglades. Currents were way too strong to stay even with a north current. Next drop was at 40 ft inside of the reef. My first Mutton came over the rail and the night looked promising. The Yellowtails were also coming over the rail although we were picking at them. Third drop again we picked at the tails and my second Mutton came over. Guy  in spot A Nat's usual spot hooked up on a 5lb Mutton as well on this spot, although he wasn't in the pool. One more drop and it was the same story. We picked at them. Ton's of grunt's were coming over but all in all it was a fair night. We ended up with 150 fish, half grunts and half snappers. A fair deep sea fishing night, but everyone had a great time. All enjoyed the calm seas, cool winds and view of the almost full moon.

Dateline May 27th,2011

Last night started off with a bang! Mutton fest. Big Muttons! Eddie pulled in a six pounder and them George pulled in another. I hooked my five pound mutton with a 1/8oz weight and 1ft leader with a ballyhoo plugg. I fought the mutton for what seemed like half an hour. The yellow tails where a bit slow but steady as there was little to no current. Most of us used 1/8 to 1/16 oz jigs that where still getting stuck on the bottom. We had a south current and a slow swing of the boat. The pelchard where thick around the boat. One fare was picking them off with a zabicky rig. The seas where dead flat as there was a cool breeze. Eddie was the pool winner with his mutton with edged my Mutton out by about 6oz. Until next time. Keep those lines tight.

May 20th - 7pm trip

Rickys Catch Deep Sea Fishing on the Sea Legs IIIMay 20th - 7pm trip
about 20 people on board for a beautiful, warm and calm night of deep sea fishing, thanks to Amy who was able to fit me in the stern ;)
current was ripping very good, 1/4 at least was needed, first stop in 65' I got 5 yellowtails in a row and a nice keeper mutton was caught too, but lots of tangles so kenny decided to move shallower...; fish were hard to find on the flatline so I switched to a 10' leader bottom rig baited with a nice strip of fresh cut runner and picked up a nice 4lbs mangrove. We ended up fishing in 30' of water with lots of keeper tails and grunts being caught, a nice porgy came up too.
Kenny gave us a good extra 40' of fishing and Kelly did a hell of a job with all those tangles comin' up left and right.
Boat ended with about 60 snappers and a good mess of grunts who kept some tourists busy and happy, I got 8 snappers and stole the pool with the mangrove.

Jesus and the MuttonI guess the 30 fares last night were not superstitious about Friday the 13th. The boat caught about 115 snappers. 6 keeper muttons among the catch. Jesus must have been praying hard again. He was high hook last night. Sehoon had 2 keeper muttons and 10 total snappers. I had 9 snappers. Jimmy, our foot bitten mate came along for the ride for the first time out. He forgot how to catch fish. He only caught one yellowtail. Our Friday night mate was also back to work. Kelly was hit by a scorpion fish last Friday night and came through with flying colors. Welcome back to our mates.
Well, until the next time, see you soon and keep those lines tight.

Wesnesday Night Report

Fran had the lucky number 13. She was on fire or so it seemed. We had too much current to start with. We had to fish shallow. But shallow does not mean catching no fish. Four muttons. Some big mangroves. Leave it to Capt. Ken to find them. We just hav...e to wait it out until they bite. Where were all the fares last night? Last Wednesday night we had 29 fares. This Wednesday night the 9 fares wound up with about 60 snappers. Jimmy had 10 snappers. I had 8 snappers. Fishing shallow also means some snappers have to be measured. We had plenty of action at least. All in all, not a bad night to be out on the Sea legs III.
Well, until the next time, see you soon and keep those lines tight.

Dateline May 4th 2011

The 29 fares wound up with about 60 snappers last night. Plenty of small yellowtails that had to go back. At the first drop of 35 feet, we had an early bite. Only a few were caught. The next few drops, we picked away at the snappers.  A couple of 3 pound muttons were caught.  Larry was high  hook with 8 snappers.  I had only 2  at the time when Capt. Ken said to me, Nat, put on a 1/4 ounce weight and I caught 3 more in rapid succession. I always take his advice. A few times, some big fish were on the lines. But they could not be gotten off the bottom and were cut off.
Well, until the next time, see you soon and keep those lines tight.

Better a late night bite than no bite at all.
Seas became calm. Winds died down. Too much current out side the reef. I thought I would do well last night as I started out with 4 yellowtails early. Most of the other fa...res had 2 to 3 snappers.
Had to move because not enough of a bite going on for us.
At the next drop we stayed there without moving again. It was a slow pick and some bluefish moved in on us. We had 6 cutoffs at once. A couple of them were landed. At 11 P.M. the late bite started. In the next hour of fishing, I caught 8 more yellowtails. High hook Nat. Larry almost caught up to me with his 10 snappers. The 18 fares totaled 65 snappers.
Well, until the next time, see you soon and keep those lines tight.

Don't ask.  Don't tell.

I told you not to ask. Winds 10 to 15 MPH. Seas 2 to 4 feet. Too much current. Too little current. 20 fares caught 20 snappers. Some grunts and toros. At one drop, you couldn't get past the bluefish cutoffs to get at the snappers. I did not get a snapper until 11:40 PM. Then I found 2 big yellowtails that bit my baits. Just then Capt. Ken had to start back for the dock. We even tried fishing at over 100 feet depth.  Some vermillions were caught there. Each fishing trip is different. Monday night the boat almost caught the limit. Over 100 snappers were brought aboard.
Well, until the next time, see you soon and keep those lines tight.

Well spring is definitely upon us and the calm seas and the yellow tail snappers are here! Last night was a testament to that for sure. The seas were flat and we had a north current. This is perfect conditions for deep sea fishing. We headed north of the port and our first stop was at 80 ft. The Yellow Tail Snappers and the Mangroves were immediately on our lines. We slammed them! Yellow tail after yellow tail came over the rail. Larry was high hook , he kept his limit but caught 20 snappers. A new comer to the Sea Legs III won the fish pool last night after Capt. Kenny gave him his spinner and lessons on how to flat line for snapper. Not only did he win the fish pool but he also but also caught his limit of nice 2lbs tails.  Sehoon caught 12 yellow tail and nice sized Mangrove Snappers. George caught 8. Arshad and his son caught a nice king fish as well as some yellow tails and mangroves.  Conditions changed toward the end of the night and the deep sea fishing bite slowed, but if you missed Friday night you missed a good one.

Dateline April 20th 2011

At our first drop of 90 feet, the current was ripping.  Stayed for about 10 minutes.  After the next 3 drops we finally hit into snappers that really turned on. They were hitting real hard. The 13 fares caught about 50 snappers. 4 muttons were in our catch. I sat in my little corner and was quietly going about my business of catching snappers. Capt Ken asked me after a little while how I was doing. I said I have 10 snappers and he said, am I sure my count is right. How could I have more than him? Well, high hook Nat did just that. High hook Nat struck again.  Winds calmed down and seas were 2 to 3 feet after  awhile.  Jimmy caught 8  and Dan would have won the big fish pool, but usually does not go into it.
Well, see you soon, and keep those lines tight.

Saturday Night
...I usually do not fish the Sea Legs III on Saturday night. My friend, Paul is down for the holidays and to see his mom and of course to fish with me on the Sea Legs. Well, so far Paul caught 5 keepers Friday night and again 5 keepers Saturday night. He caught the biggest snapper last night with a 2 1/2 lb mutton. Since being a novice, Paul did not enter the big fish pool. You never can tell. Larry won the pool with his mutton which was smaller than Paul's. Larry, Roland, and Richard caught 37 snappers between them. The 25 fares totaled 65 snappers and plenty of bottom fish. Nice night to be out on the Sea Legs.
Well, until the next time, see you soon and keep those lines tight.

Friday Night Report
Dateline April 15th 2011

For those of us that went deep sea fishing Friday night the magic number was 5. Of the 41 fares, 5 of us caught 5 keeper snappers. Fran and Lise split 10 snappers. Sehoon caught 5 , Which included 3 yellowtails a Mangrove Snapper and a lane snapper.I caught 5 Yellowtails. Jesus had 5 yellow tails. Albert was high hook with the odd 7. The seas were relatively flat with a south east slow current. Most of the snappers were caught on a 1/8 to 1/16 oz jig. Lise is going home to Canada next Tuesday.  Her family and I will miss her company. Come back soon. There were tons of yellowtails under the size limit that were caught, keeping the action up.  Plenty of big grunts and toros and squirrel fish. I had 8 friends from the hospital aboard for the first time. They were using boat rods and caught snappers along with the usual bottom fish. George only had 3 snappers but he won the big fish pool with a nice keeper mutton. My friend Paul is down here for this weekend and we will be fishing 3 nights on the Sea Legs III. Paul caught 4 keepers and had them filleted so his mom could enjoy fresh caught fish. We will go at it again Saturday night.
Well until the next time, see you soon and keep those lines tight.

Jeepers, creepers. Where were all those keepers?
Winds were almost calm. Seas were flat. 30 fares last night. Could not go deep sea fishing for Vermillions because of too much current in deeper  waters. The Sea Legs III wound up with about 60 keeper snappers five of them were muttons . Of course the usual Red Groupers that had to go back. Plenty of Grunts were caught. Jimmy landed a 7 pound Kingfish caught with his rod that had 12 lb. test on his spool. George brought along 5 of his friends. They had 4 of the Mutton snappers. One of them won the big fish pool with his 4 lb. Mutton.  Jesus was high hook with 8 snappers. I had 2 tails and 2 Mangroves and plenty of action with many short tails. Albert was back to Friday night and did not forget how to catch snappers. He caught 6 keepers.
Well, until the next time, see you soon and keep those lines tight.

Rickys Muttons Deep Sea FishingI guess the weather report scared off some of the regular fares last night It turned out winds were only about 7 to 10 miles an hour and seas were about 2 to 4 going out to the grounds and calmed down to around 2 foot by 10 P.M. The Sea Legs III swung back and forth all night. Current heeded us to fish for Vermillions in deeper water.

We fished shallow water and found plenty of yellowtails. The 10 fares wound up with 40 snappers and we had to throw back at least that many that were too small to keep. Plenty of bottom fishing action. 4 keeper size muttons were landed. Ricky caught a 19 and a 21 inch Mutton. One of the new fares caught a 19 inch red grouper and some snappers. Nice going for her. Lise and myself caught 3 keeper snappers each.
Well, until the next time, see you soon and keep those lines tight.

Deep Sea Fishing For The American Heart AssociationAs the Northeast part of our country is still enduring 20 and 30 degree temperatures, South Florida is blessed with beautiful weather and perfect conditions for fishing. Sunny and calm was the theme as the 43 fairs ventured out for our deep sea fishing trip to benefit the American Heart Association. The second annual tournament sponsored by the party boat “Sea Legs III” and Memorial Regional Hospital was a big success. The visions of Vermillion Snappers, Mutton Snappers and King Fish danced in the heads of many.  Capt. Kenny and his crew of the Sea Legs III in Hollywood made that a reality. Some of the non-fishermen simply enjoyed the sunny skies by just being in the outdoors and basking in our blessed sunshine as the cool breeze and mists of ocean surrounded them.
We headed south of Port Everglades in the deep sea fishing grounds at  about 180 feet.   Vermilion and Mutton Snappers came over the rail and most of us couldn’t get our lines into the water quick enough. The delicious Trigger fish continue to hit our lines.  Huge Lane Snappers usually a smaller species of Snapper weren’t so small this time. The 2-3 pound lanes were mistaken by some as, “a ugly Mutton”.  The pool winner took home $115 with his King fish that weighed 6 pounds 5oz. He narrowly edged out a 6 pound Mutton Snapper.
Lot’s of fish were caught as most of the passengers brought home nice dinners as well as great stories, but more importantly everyone had a great time and enjoyed the great day as we all helped the American Heart Association. Hope to see you next year.

Dateline March 30th 2011

Wednesday night most of the regularfares decided not to go out.
It was bumpy going out to the fishing grounds when we started out. Seas were 3 to 5  foot.
Winds out of the south at a good clip. At 10 P.M. the seas were almost flat and not as windy. That meant good fishing, but too much current when we fished deep . Had to fish shallow the rest of the night. Suprisingly though, we did pretty good with decent size yellowtails and mangroves. The grunts were very big and they bit so well that it was difficult getting to the snappers.
Plenty of toros, grunts, and squirrel fish for all . Dan caught a 5  pound mutton snapper. He wasn't in the big fish pool, again. I had 3 nice tails and 2 keeper mangroves, along with many bottom fish. Not too bad for the 14 fares Wednesday night.
Well until the next time, see you soon and keep those lines tight.

Amber Jack Fishing on Wreck. Deep Sea FishingDay time fishing on wrecks of the deep seas off of Fort Lauderdale have been producing quality fish. As the warm weather approaches Cobia, Amberjack and King fish are making thier ravenous appearances. The Sea Legs Graze the Triggerfish are still very prominent. Even the delicious African Pompano are hitting lines like they haven't eaten all winter. The quality fish are making a come back.

For night fishing this past Friday, We were boarded by the Florida Fish and Wildlife patrol . They measured all the snappers we caught last night. Do not ever, and I mean ever put any fish not the legal size in your personal cooler.  One cooler had a mangrove that was under the 10 inch size limit. The community fish box had two snappers that was very close to the mark. These could have been subject to a fine of $500.00 dollars for each fish.
Warnings this time were issued for all concerned.

The 14 fares caught about 50 snappers. I could have been high hook Nat, if they let me count all the big grunts, moray eels, toros, squirrel fish and short snappers I caught. George won the fish pool with a nice 4 pound mutton just beating out Lise.  There were 6 keeper muttons caugh last night. I had a short mutton also. Plenty of bottom fish caught.. One party next to me caught 3 moray eels in a row. He also caughta 5 pound mutton, but did not get in to the big fish pool. You can't win it if you're not in it.
Well, until the next time, see you soon and keep those lines tight.

Cobia Caught off Fort Lauderdale Deep Sea FishingWhen I arrived at the dock to for my deepsea fishing trip, the afternoon trip came back with 9 kingfish and plenty of trigger fish. Roger caught a 20 pound Cobia as well as 4 Kingfish on  the morningtrip. Fishing has turned on for the better as the warm weather heats up. The fish are becoming ravenouse. My gut was that we were gonna have a great night of fishing. The winds which were supposed to be 5 miles. Seas were supposed to be 2 feet. It took until about 10:30 PM for that to happen. There was too much current in deep water. Had to fish shallow. South wind and south current meant big swings and many tangles for the 18 fares.  I was high hook with 8 keeper snappers. Dan and Jimmy had a nice catch. Lise won the big fish pool with a nice yellowtail. Dan's yellowtail was larger, but he was not in the biggest fish pool. Plenty of big, and I mean big grunts last night.
There were several keeper red groupers caught. Had to release them. No groupers until May 1st.
Get to the Sea Legs III and get out and catch your share. Yellowtails are feeding finally.
Well, until the next time, see you soon and keep those lines tight.

We had about 30 fares and had plenty of action last night. Yellowtails Mangrove and bottom fish were plentiful. Because of ripping current outside of the reef, fished shallow water. George and I had 2 pound yellowtails amongst our catch. Jesus won the big snapper pool with a 2 lb 4 oz. mangrove. Lonnie was next with his 2 lb 2 oz mangrove. I was Red Grouper high hook Nat with 9 snappers. Sehoon, George, Lonnie, Jesus and Lise
each caught 7 keeper snappers. Every one had their share of big grunts and toros. Brandon lost a real big fish. Probably a cobia from the way the line was going offshore and deep. Lonnie and Eric also had nice keeper sized Groupers that had to be thrown back.  May 1st will the start of Grouper season.  We will start hunting these tasty fish. Hope they are still there.
Well until the next time, see you soon and keep those lines tight.

You should have been here last night. Well, for the 16 fares last night, we were there last night. We limited out on mostly yellowtails along with a few mangroves. 155 snappers for the boat. I wasn't high with hook but landed my share. The seas were flat. Wind was calm. Fish were biting at the first drop immediately. We never had to move the boat. Oh what a night. You should have been there. The boat out of Fort Lauderdale may have had more passengers, but they did not catch as many as us.  That's Capt. Ken for you. He knows where they are.
Well, until the next time, see you soon and keep those lines tight.

Mangrove Snappers caught Deep Sea Fishing on Sealegs IIIMy daughter Sindee is flying home right now as I write. She is going home with 20 fillets of fresh caught snappers. The 14 fares aboard the Sea Legs III finally had some nice action. 7 seemed to be the lucky number last night. Sehoon, Lonnie, Lise and George caught 7 snappers. Finally, many yellowtails were in the mix. My daughter and I had 10 between us. We all caught Blue Fish on the Sea Legs IIImany toros and bluefish at one spot. Couldn't get past them to get at the snappers. Plenty of action at least. I was able to bring about a dozen grunts to the hospital where I volunteer. Seas were calm and very little wind, but also no current. Need current for the fish to really turn on.
Well, until the next time, see you soon and keep those lines tight.

Monday Night March 8th, 2011

Welcome back to Nat's Fishing Report from the deck of the number one fishing vessel on the planet, this is Lonnie checking in and letting you guys know the deal from the rail. Monday night we had 10 anglers and beautiful weather but absolutly 0 current. Lines ran off the port side, so I decided to enjoy the solarity of the bow and fished big baits on the bottom most of the night and literally flat lined for yellow tails. I ended up with 2 tails and a lane. Barber had a few snapper as well and the other 8 had their share of bottom fish. Billy the Mate helped a lady on the side catch a legal mutton. All in all a slow but fun night!
If youre itching to get out during the day, Capt. Kenny says the Kingfish are starting to bite. Its that time of year. Alright friends thats all for now. See ya on the deep blue. Lonnie

Dateline February 25 2011

What a beautiful night to be on the water. Winds calmed down. Seas became flat. Fish----well, you can't win them all.
Jesus did his usual bit catching 7 yellowtails. I caught 1. Sehoon had 4, George had 5 and shared the big snapper pool with Jesus. Each yellowtail both weighed 1 lb. 12 oz. My snapper and Lise's was 1 lb 2 oz.
Still catching some big grunts. Too much current outside of the reef. Too little current fishing shallow. Probably not long before conditions will finally be just right for the Sea Legs III to catch our limit.
Well, until the next time, see you soon and keep those lines tight.

Nat won the pool with a 3lb Squirel Fish... GO NAT!......Until next time. Tight Lines!!!
